Welcome

I am a collector of faces, but a portrait is more than just a superficial likeness.  It should also give a deeper insight into the subject's personality, and mood.

My charcoal grisaille paintings are starkly truthful, often darkly introspective, and almost voyeuristic.  They provide a controlled, finely observed dissection of the sitter's emotion, and character.

Generally I eschew the traditional portraitist's use of narrative to define the subject, but use tightly cropped images, and controlled lighting, to achieve what are often highly dramatic pictures.

To sit at an easel, and with just a stick of charcoal, piece of paper, and my fingers, to bring an image to life, allows me to connect.  It defines me.

Kevin Line.
